Chiropractic Care in Surrey, White Rock
Chiropractic care at Semiahmoo Wellness Center focuses on enhancing nervous system function, joint function, and movement patterns using a hands-on approach.
The nervous system controls everything, including pain, movement, sleep, and the capacity to deal with stress and when the nervous system feels unsafe, it attempts to protect us through different mechanisms such as pain, immobility, weakness, poor co-ordination, stress, and fatigue.
What to Expect
At your first appointment our chiropractor, Dr. Peters, will start with an in-depth review of your past and current health history along with a discussion of your concerns and goals. Her aim is to understand what your needs are, what you have tried in the past, and what you are hoping for to best personalize and tailor your care. She will then examine things such as your posture, movement, and functioning to assess the integrity of your joints, muscles, and nervous system in order to address the root cause of your symptoms. Afterwards she will talk you through her diagnosis and recommendations. Treatment is commonly provided on the first visit. It would be helpful to wear clothes that you are comfortable moving in.

Things that can cause the nervous system to feel overwhelmed or threatened include:
1. Physical Stressors – such as acute or repetitive injuries, car accidents, sports injuries, and postural strain

FAQ
What is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic is a healthcare profession focused on assessing, diagnosing, and treating conditions related to the muscles, joints, and nervous system. Chiropractors use a variety of evidence-informed techniques, including manual therapy, exercise recommendations, lifestyle advice, and patient education to help improve function and support overall well-being.
How much education does my chiropractor have?
Chiropractors complete extensive education and clinical training before becoming licensed healthcare professionals. In Canada, aspiring chiropractors must first complete at least three years of undergraduate university studies before being admitted to an accredited Doctor of Chiropractic program, which requires an additional four years of full-time education.
Their training includes comprehensive coursework in anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, imaging, rehabilitation, and evidence-informed patient care. In addition to classroom learning, chiropractic students gain hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of experienced practitioners, developing skills in patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral when appropriate.
After graduation, candidates must successfully complete rigorous national board examinations administered by the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB) and meet the licensing requirements of the provincial regulatory body where they intend to practice.
Will I be treated during my first appointment?
In many cases, treatment will begin during the first visit. However, this depends on the findings of your examination and whether treatment is considered appropriate and safe. At times additional imaging may be required before treatment.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic care is widely recognized as safe when provided by a licensed chiropractor. As with any healthcare treatment, there are potential risks and benefits, which your chiropractor will discuss with you before beginning care. Dr. Peters most frequently employs a number of low force techniques, such as joint mobilizations, neurokinetic therapy, craniosacral therapy, and exercise therapy. All treatment plans will be discussed ahead of time to ensure patient comfort.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of visits you'll need depends on several factors, including your condition, how long you've been experiencing it, your overall health, and your personal goals.
In many cases, visits are recommended more frequently at the beginning of care, particularly when addressing issues that have developed over time. As your body adapts and your symptoms, function, and resilience improve, appointments will be spaced further apart.
A helpful way to think about chiropractic care is similar to exercise: meaningful and lasting changes are often the result of consistent input over time rather than a single visit. Our goal is to work with you to create a plan that fits your lifestyle, supports your goals, and helps you feel and function at your best.
Do I need to see a chiropractor forever?
People seek chiropractic care for a variety of reasons. Some go for symptomatic relief of pain or discomfort (Relief Care). Others are interested in having the cause of the problem as well as the symptoms corrected and relieved (Corrective Care). Still others want their bodies brought to the highest state of health possible to maintain their activity levels and functional goals, reduce reinjury risk, and address small issues before they become larger issues (Supportive Care). Supportive care is especially beneficial if you do not engage in physical activity, you have an injury that repeatedly occurs, or you have a physically intense occupation or hobby.
Whether you're seeking short-term support for a specific concern or incorporating chiropractic care into your long-term health routine, both approaches are valid. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs and goals. You are by no means obligated to continue with chiropractic once you start.
What if chiropractic care isn't right for me?
Your health and safety are our priority. If chiropractic care is not appropriate for your condition, we will discuss alternative options and, when necessary, refer you to another healthcare provider for further evaluation or treatment.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers, so you can book an appointment directly without a referral.
Will my insurance cover chiropractic care?
Many extended health insurance plans include chiropractic coverage. Coverage amounts vary by provider and plan. We recommend contacting your insurance company directly to confirm your benefits.
Do you offer direct billing?
Yes, we direct bill to most extended benefits provider including (but not limited to): Pacific blue cross, Sunlife, Manulife, Green Shield, Canada Life, Desjardins, Chambers of Commerce, Coughlin & Associates, Industrial Alliance, Group Health, & Equitable Life. You can always contact our clinic to verify whether your insurance plan is eligible if you are unsure.
